Instructions

1. Begin by observing the safety recommendations in Tips for a Safe Work Environment. Cover all work surfaces with plastic or newspaper, prepare your mold(s) (see Molds), and lay out your soapmaking equipment so it is within reach. See here for a complete list of what you’ll need. Once you start to mix ingredients, it will be too late to stop and hunt for things. Wear safety glasses and rubber gloves at all times in this process. Soapmaking will take your undivided attention from start to finish, so allow yourself plenty of time free from distractions to complete the task.

2. Melt the vegetable shortening in an 8-quart pot over low heat on the stove.

3. Weigh the liquid oils carefully on a digital scale; add them to the pan with the shortening. Heat the combined ingredients only until the vegetable shortening is completely melted, then immediately remove from heat. Do not overheat your oils — it is possible to ruin them for soapmaking by overheating or scorching them. You are not deep-frying french fries, you are making soap. Set aside until step 9.
